Terms of Service
Effective March 25, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of onit, a website-building service for home service professionals. By creating an account or using onit, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, don't use the service.
1. What onit Does
onit builds and hosts websites for home service professionals — plumbers, HVAC technicians, electricians, and similar trades. Here's how it works:
- You answer 5 questions about your business (business name, trade, service area, email, and a description of your services)
- Onit builds your custom website within 24 hours
- Onit handles everything: hosting, domain, SSL, and ongoing maintenance
Your subscription includes:
Custom website design — a professional site tailored to your trade and service area
Copywriting — written content for your pages based on what you provide
Hosting & domain — Onit registers, configures, and hosts your site
SSL certificate — HTTPS encryption, always on
Local SEO — your site is built to rank in your service area
Contact forms — so potential customers can reach you
Automated emails — form submission notifications delivered to your inbox
Google Analytics setup — traffic tracking configured and ready to go
2. Free Trial
Every new account starts with a 24-hour free trial. During the trial:
- You get full access to the service
- Onit begins building your website immediately
- You will not be charged until the trial ends
- You can cancel at any time before the trial expires and you won't be billed
If you don't cancel before the 24-hour trial period ends, your subscription automatically converts to a paid plan and your payment method on file will be charged.
3. Billing & Payment
After your free trial, onit costs $19.99 per month. Here's how billing works:
- Billing cycle — you're billed on the same date each month, starting the day your trial ends
- Payment method — all payments are processed through Stripe. Onit never stores your card details directly.
- Failed payments — if a payment fails, Onit will retry a few times and notify you by email. If payment can't be collected after multiple attempts, your site may be taken offline until the balance is resolved.
- No refunds — because you can cancel at any time and your trial is free, Onit does not offer refunds for partial billing periods. If you cancel mid-cycle, your site stays active until the end of that billing period.
- Price changes — if the price ever changes, you'll get at least 30 days' notice by email. The new price applies at the start of your next billing cycle after the notice period.
4. Cancellation
You can cancel your onit subscription at any time. Here's what happens when you do:
- During your free trial — cancel before the trial ends and you won't be charged. Your site will be removed.
- After the trial — cancel anytime and your site stays live through the end of your current billing period. After that, your site goes offline.
- Your data — Onit retains your account data for 90 days after cancellation in case you want to come back. After 90 days, it's deleted.
- Your domain — if Onit registered a domain on your behalf, reach out within 30 days of cancellation to arrange a transfer. After 30 days, the domain may expire.
To cancel, email [email protected]. Onit will confirm your cancellation within 1 business day.
5. Intellectual Property
Let's be clear about who owns what:
- Your content — you own the business information, photos, logos, and any original content you provide. That's yours, always.
- Copywriting Onit creates — the website copy written for you based on your input becomes yours. If you cancel and want to take it elsewhere, you're free to do that.
- The onit platform — the underlying code, templates, design system, tools, and infrastructure that power your site belong to onit. You're licensing the use of these as part of your subscription.
- Site design — the visual design and layout of your site is built from onit's templates and systems. You can't extract or redistribute the templates, but the overall look of your site is part of the service you're paying for.
In short: your business content is yours. The platform and code belong to onit. While you're a subscriber, you have full use of both together.
6. Acceptable Use
onit is built for legitimate home service businesses. You agree not to use the service to:
- Misrepresent your business, credentials, or licensing
- Publish false or misleading information about your services
- Host content that is illegal, defamatory, harassing, or promotes violence
- Use your onit site for any business other than the home services trade you signed up under
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or copy onit's platform, templates, or code
- Resell or sublicense onit's service to others
- Send spam or abuse the contact form or email systems
If Onit determines you're violating these rules, your account may be suspended or terminated. Onit will try to give you a warning first, but reserves the right to act immediately for serious violations.
7. Availability & Uptime
Onit works hard to keep your site online, but can't guarantee 100% uptime. Occasionally, sites may be briefly unavailable due to maintenance, server issues, or circumstances beyond control. Onit is not liable for any lost business due to downtime.
That said, if your site experiences prolonged downtime (more than 24 consecutive hours) due to an issue on Onit's end, reach out and Onit will credit your account for the affected period.
8. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- onit is provided "as is" — Onit doesn't guarantee that your site will generate leads, rank on Google, or produce any specific business outcome
- Onit is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, including lost profits, lost customers, or business interruption
- Total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of onit is limited to the amount you've paid in the 3 months immediately preceding the claim
- Third-party services — Onit is not responsible for issues caused by Stripe, Google, domain registrars, or any other third-party service integrated with the platform
Onit builds great websites and stands behind the work, but running a website is one piece of running a business — results beyond the service itself can't be promised.
9. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold onit harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses (including legal fees) arising from:
- Content you provide for your website that infringes someone else's rights
- Your violation of these Terms
- Your operation of your home service business (onit builds the site — Onit is not responsible for the services you provide to your customers)
10. Dispute Resolution
If something goes wrong, Onit would rather work it out directly than involve lawyers. Here's how disputes are handled:
- Step 1: Reach out — email [email protected] with a description of the issue. Onit will respond within 5 business days and make a good-faith effort to resolve it.
- Step 2: Mediation — if it can't be resolved informally within 30 days, either party may request non-binding mediation.
- Step 3: Arbitration — if mediation doesn't work, the dispute will be resolved through binding arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association. Arbitration will be conducted individually — you waive any right to participate in a class action.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the United States. Any arbitration or legal proceeding will take place in the state where onit operates.
11. Changes to These Terms
Onit may update these Terms from time to time. When that happens:
- Active subscribers will be emailed with a summary of what changed
- The "Effective" date at the top of this page will be updated
- Material changes take effect 30 days after notice
- Continuing to use onit after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms
If you don't agree with the changes, you can cancel your subscription before they take effect.
12. General
- Entire agreement — these Terms, along with the Privacy Policy, make up the complete agreement between you and onit
- Severability — if any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest remains in effect
- No waiver — if Onit doesn't enforce a provision of these Terms, that doesn't mean the right to enforce it later has been waived
- Assignment — you can't transfer your account or these Terms to someone else without written consent. Onit may transfer rights and obligations if acquired or merged with another company.
- Age requirement — you must be at least 18 years old to use onit
13. Contact
